Several days ago, I published an article entitled Go Long the Nuclear Revival which concluded by recommending investing in uranium through the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust ( OTCPK:SRUUF ). While the reasoning and arguments made in the piece still stand and I believe will be valid over the longer-term, the immediate risks posed to the sector by the ongoing war in Ukraine make investing in uranium too risky in the short-term. The opening day of a recent three-day mining industry event ahead of the 2022 PDAC (Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada) meeting featured keynote speeches and company presentations.

In one headliner talk, Anna Bryndza, executive vice president of UxC — which is a firm that publishes data, research, and analysis on the global nuclear fuel cycle markets — discussed a handful of events happening in the world that will affect nuclear power and uranium in the near and longer-term future.

The one certainty, Bryndza said, is that investments in green energy will continue to boost demand for nuclear energy. As an example, she cited the European Union possibly mandating €50 billion in industry funding by 2030.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell despite an encouraging jobs report. Uranium stocks were punished after Russia attacked a Ukraine nuclear plant. Tesla ( TSLA ) held up after CEO Elon Musk issued a challenge. Rivian ( RIVN ) plunged.

A trio of stocks managed to make bullish moves despite the challenging action. Public Storage ( PSA ), SandRidge Energy ( SD ) and CMS Energy ( CMS ) tested buy points.

Volatility was up, with the Cboe Volatility Index, or VIX, spiking more than 9%. Volume was running higher on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq vs. the same time Thursday, a negative on a down day.

ASX uranium stocks have reacted to another risk event stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, amid unconfirmed reports a nuclear power plant is on fire after Russian shelling.

The plant is situated in Zaporizhzhia, a city in south-eastern Ukraine, and is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.

Canadian project developer Denison Mines is witnessing positive demand signals for uranium and believes that the narrative for top-tier new uranium mining projects has become “quite positive”, president and CEO David Cates said on Thursday.

“We have seen nuclear utilities seek to address significant future uncovered requirements in an environment with reduced visibility to available sources of supply – leading to increased long-term contracting activity and prices,” he said, adding that there was a “growing chorus of support” for the role that nuclear would play in the clean energy transition.

Denison is advancing the Wheeler River project, with an aim of moving the Phoenix deposit towards a development decision. Now, several years into the long-term plan for Wheeler River, the project “is uniquely aligned to emerge as the first in-situ recovery mine in the Athabasca basin region”.
