Evening Wrap: ASX 200 slides as local tech stocks crumble on NASDAQ plunge, defensives prosper, uranium stocks dive

There’s an old saying that when the US stock market sneezes, the Aussie share market catches a cold.

Well, US tech stocks sneezed (um, sneezed and keeled over) last night, so you can guess what happened to Aussie tech stocks today.

Let’s dive in! Markets

XJO Intraday Chart 18 July 2024 ASX 200 Session ChartThe S&P/ASX 200 ( XJO ) finished 21.4 points lower at 8,036.5, 0.42% from its session high and just 0.13% from its low. In the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 ( XKO ), advancers lagged decliners by a dismal 88 to 184.Moves on the ASX today were generally simple to explain. As usual, we pretty much just reflect what happened in the USA overnight (with some wiggle room around Resources and Energy stocks that usually follow commodity prices). What happened in the USA overnight? GoviEx Uranium Letter to Stakeholders

Vancouver, British Columbia–(Newsfile Corp. – July 17, 2024) – GoviEx Uranium Inc. (TSXV: GXU) (OTCQX: GVXXF) ("GoviEx" or "Company") today provides a letter to stakeholders from the Executive Chairman, Govind Friedland.

Dear Stakeholders,

Nearly two weeks ago, our Company was informed by the Government of the Republic of Niger that it no longer has rights over the perimeter of the mining permit for our Madaouela Project, which reverted back to the public domain.

This decision came despite our very best efforts spanning almost two decades, which have transformed Madaouela from an exploratory venture into one of the world’s largest known uranium deposits. Since acquiring our license, we have navigated through extreme uncertainty and withstood periods of historically low uranium prices. Despite this, we continued to develop the project through 2023 when uranium prices exceeded the US$65 per pound U3O8 used in our 2022 Feasibility Study. 1 Our readiness to escalate development was […]

Myriad Uranium Initiates Geophysical Survey at Copper Mountain Uranium Project, Wyoming, USA

Myriad Uranium holds a 75% earnable interest in the Copper Mountain Uranium Project which saw US$78m (2024$) in exploration and development expenditures by Union Pacific during the 1970s.

Union Pacific drilled approximately 2,000 boreholes, discovered 7 uranium deposits, and developed a 6-pit mine plan at Copper Mountain, estimating resources of between 15.7 and 30.1 Mlbs eU 3 O 8 and estimating the further potential of known and speculated targets within the project area to be over 65 Mlbs. These estimates are historical and not yet current under NI 43-101.

Myriad intends to bring these historical resources current under NI 43-101 and, if possible, go beyond them, initially focusing on the ‘High Grade Zone’ of the Canning Deposit (see Figure 1) which hosts the largest estimated historical resource at Copper Mountain.

A ground magnetometer survey is now underway over 571 acres at Canning. Line spacing is 25 […]

3 Best ETFs to Invest in Uranium Stocks

Kazakhstan, the leading producer of uranium, just announced a shift in its policies that increased the value of uranium stocks – and raised concerns about future uranium supply. On July 10, the Kazakh government announced a significant MET increase , replacing the 6% flat rate with a 9% rate in 2025 and a two-tier system in 2026 that could push rates up to 20.5%.

The market reacted quickly, as uranium stocks surged. The bullish sentiment stems from potential supply constraints due to the new tax structure. According to BMO, the new tax rates "provide less incentive for Kazatomprom to increase production, in our view, with less penalty for higher uranium prices than production, which could add to support for the uranium price." This backdrop creates a compelling case for investors to consider uranium-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as a strategic addition to their portfolios.

And beyond the finer points of Kazakh tax […]

Cameco is breaking ground on new ways to mine uranium

Michael Joel-Hansen

Regina Leader-Post

Many countries around the world are looking to build out their capacity for nuclear power as they try to reduce their carbon emissions, which has created an increased demand for uranium. But the market for uranium has also been undergoing some major changes due to sanctions on Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine. There have been quite a few changes on the operations front, too.For example, Saskatoon-based uranium miner Cameco Corp. is undergoing a major evolution in the way it extracts the heavy metal. Lloyd Rowson, vice-president of technical services, said the best example of this change can be seen at the Cigar Lake mine, which began […]

How Infini stunned the ASX with uranium soil assays

Infini Resources’ newly-appointed managing director Charles Armstrong. Credit: File Holed up alone in a Subiaco office for days, Charles Armstrong was running against the clock trying to find one last piece for an exploration puzzle being put together for the ASX listing of Infini Resources in January.

Then a consultant for the ASX newcomer, Armstrong painstakingly scoured the internet, hour after long hour, until he settled on a remote plot of Portland Creek ground in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador that had “fallen through the cracks”.

And that very piece of land – which featured what he described as a “whopper of a soil anomaly” – has in the past fortnight been at the centre of a wild share price ride for Infini and its savvy early investors after the company’s stock jumped more than 520 per cent on the back of lab-busting uranium soil results going up to […]

World-class Infini uranium grades a big hit on ASX

Infini Resources has revealed lab-busting grades for the uranium from its Portland Creek project in Canada. A decision by Infini Resources to send lab-busting uranium assays from its Portland Creek project in Canada back for re-analysis has delivered wild grades and a matching share price hike on the ASX this morning.

With the company’s stock jumping more than 83 per cent – a second big run in as many weeks – management says the soil sampling grades going up to 74,997 parts per million (7.5 per cent) uranium oxide could be the highest ever recorded. Its share price had been sitting as low as 14.5c just a fortnight ago, but hit a high of 90c today as nearly 7.5 million units changed hands in the first three hours of intraday trading.

Infini last week revealed that 17 soil samples had broken the upper limit of detection at the lab, putting the […]

Wyoming Uranium Producer Ramps Up To Meet $100M-Plus Sale To European Buyer

Strata Energy proposes to sell a significant amount of Wyoming uranium to a Belgium company. (Strata Energy) Strata Energy Inc., the U.S. unit of Australian-based Peninsula Energy Ltd., is on schedule to begin uranium production at its central processing plant in northeastern Wyoming by December, an executive of the Wyoming business told Cowboy State Daily on Monday.

Peninsula is moving forward with uranium recovery operations in the northeastern part of the state roughly 25 miles north of Moorcroft in the coal-rich Powder River Basin region.

Peninsula, which has already invested about $50 million in the processing plant, has lined up supply deals with U.S. and European-based utilities, said Peninsula Energy’s Managing Director and CEO Wayne Heili.

“The key is that the uranium industry is doing its part to bringing production back to the state of Wyoming because economic conditions are right,” Heili said.He estimated that employment is expected to double to roughly […]

Is Uranium finally back?

© Reuters. Is Uranium finally back? Analysts at Alpine Macro and BCA Research are bullish on uranium, with Alpine calling a "super-cycle bull market" for uranium.

The firm cited a global shift back towards nuclear energy. Their note highlights the challenges the industry faced after Fukushima, with widespread reactor closures and depressed prices. However, they argue that a perfect storm of factors is now propelling uranium into a new era.

Firstly, they highlight the need for clean energy with reliable baseload generation has become paramount. Nuclear’s ability to deliver on both fronts, along with its minimal land footprint and safety record compared to fossil fuels, positions it as a critical tool in the fight against climate change.

Secondly, Alpine says uranium supply is struggling to keep pace with resurgent demand. Following years of underinvestment and mine closures, the industry is facing a structural supply deficit. The firm explains that this is further exacerbated […]
