Uranium to become pricier in fallout from Niger military coup: experts

A survey and exploration facility of uranium of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) File photo: Courtesy of CNNC The military coup in Niger may push up uranium prices in the near future due to reduced supplies, Chinese experts said on Thursday, but the crisis will have little impact on China, which has achieved a breakthrough in uranium exploration.

Niger’s Defense and Security Forces said on July 26 that soldiers had overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum, hours after he was allegedly held hostage, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Uranium is the heaviest element that is used in nuclear power, medicine and defense. As the world shifts toward cleaner energy resources and countries pursue carbon neutrality, the competition for uranium will intensify, experts said.

The coup in the West African country, which is rich in uranium, has created uncertainty over market supply.According to data from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, as of 2020, Niger had […]

How Madison Metals plans to disrupt junior finance with a uranium token

Stock image. “We created a really interesting marketing ploy – attaching our in-ground verified uranium resources to a stable token backed by cryptocurrency. It’s an opportunity for investors to get leveraged to the uranium price, and we think the timing is perfect,” Parnham told The Northern Miner in an interview.

Madison is working on launching its strategy, aimed at disrupting traditional mining funding by tokenizing the company’s uranium resources, in the next six weeks. It signed a forward sales agreement with an international bank on June 1 to supply 20 million lb. of uranium via a token, providing an alternative funding source for the company.

“This disruption in how we fund junior mining companies using cryptocurrency and a forward sales agreement is a bit early for the traditional mining approach, but sometimes you have to take a little risk to do something unique and different,” Parnham says.

Russians plan N$9 billion uranium mine

The firm, through its worldwide mining company Uranium One, intends to finish the prospecting and exploring phase of the Wings project by 2026.

Uranium Week: More Capacity Required

Calls are becoming more urgent for increased nuclear capacity globally.

-Nuclear capacity a pressing issue in Europe
-New and restarted generation projects increasing
-Uranium supply remains beholden to geopolitics

The Centre for Energy and Climate at the French Institute of International Relations said last week long-term operation of nuclear power plants in Europe needs to be a strategic decision taken to maintain the future stability and resilience of the electricity grid, as the region moves toward a dominant share of intermittent renewable energy sources in its generation mix, industry consultant TradeTech reports.During the recent NuclearEurope 2023 conference held in Lyon, the director told attendees a decision is needed because as European electricity demand increases, the region may have its lowest level of available baseload capacity, particularly as baseload plants such as coal are shut down. Similar messages are emerging from Japan, Canada, the US and other countries. As unprecedented heatwaves […]

Uranium veteran John Borshoff was excited last year, now he’s even more bullish

U308 now trading at uS$56/lb, up from under US$20lb in 2016

60 new reactors under construction, 104 planned, 338 proposed

China now becoming a major player John Borshoff last year warned nuclear utilities which had failed to incentivise new uranium mines into production would find themselves caught out just like carmakers desperately short of lithium, who found themselves paying through the nose last year as their EV production plans ramped up. Now the boss of uranium hopeful Deep Yellow (ASX:DYL) , which sees a pathway to developing its Tumas mine in Namibia by 2026, says his conviction in uranium’s bull case is even firmer.Famously volatile spot prices have been among the few commodity indexes to have an air of stability this year.Having languished as low as under US$20/lb — deep in lossmaking territory for most producers — when the former Paladin Energy (ASX:PDN) […]

Consider a Pair of Mining Options as Gold, Uranium Show Upside

Metals exposure extends beyond just the metal itself. Ample opportunities exist for miners, and Sprott has a pair of options worth considering given the upside in gold and uranium.

As a hawkish Fed continues to ramp up rate hikes, inflation is proving to be more stubborn than anticipated. As such, the potential for a recession continues to loom. This makes the case for gold as a safe haven asset as well as a portfolio diversifier.

“Gold bullion has unequivocally demonstrated its long-term value as a risk diversifier,” a Sprott analysis noted. “The notion that it deserves to be positioned as a defensive anchor in a balanced equity investment strategy (and perhaps in a more meaningful ratio than fixed income) is gaining traction.”

Given this, a mining opportunity exists in the Sprott Gold Miners ETF (SGDM) . If gold demand continues to rise, this can have a domino effect on the performance of […]
